What each one is
CDisplayEx’s homepage calls it a light, efficient CBR reader that also opens CBZ, PDF and manga. CDisplayEx Lite on Google Play has a price of 0 and contains ads, checked 15 October 2026. The Android settings page is where the limits are written down. Komga and Kavita are premium. Streaming and reading-status sync work with both. The Kavita section says the minimum version is 0.7 and that EPUBs are not supported. Samba streaming is premium, and the page says SMB3 is not yet available. Google Drive, Dropbox and OneDrive are premium. The page does not list an OPDS catalog.
The desktop FAQ says the desktop version is no longer under development and would need to be rewritten.
TritonPanels reads the same kind of local files, plus CBT and image-based DRM-free EPUB, on iPhone, iPad and Android. RAR5 CBRs do not open. Komga and Kavita sync both ways. OPDS 1 and 2, including Calibre, are read-only. SMB 2 and 3 are supported, with one iOS limit: a share that requires SMB encryption cannot be used. There is no free tier. The settings for a share are in reading from a NAS.
Where CDisplayEx is better
- A free local reader. CDisplayEx Lite on Google Play has a price of 0 and contains ads, checked 15 October 2026. You can read files on the device, an SD card or a USB key without paying. TritonPanels needs a subscription after the trial before it will open the library.
- You only pay if you need the servers. Komga, Kavita, Samba streaming and the cloud folders are the premium set on the settings page. That page does not print a premium price.
- FTP, and folders of images on device storage. Those are on the settings page. TritonPanels does not offer FTP.
- A Windows app still exists, for people who want one, with the developer’s own caveat that it is no longer under development.
Where TritonPanels is better
- iPhone and iPad. CDisplayEx’s mobile settings are an Android app. TritonPanels is iOS 17 or later as well.
- OPDS. The CDisplayEx settings page does not list an OPDS catalog. TritonPanels reads OPDS 1 and 2. Progress on those catalogs stays on the device.
- SMB 3, and Kavita without a separate premium switch. CDisplayEx says SMB3 is not yet available, and Kavita is premium. TritonPanels supports SMB 2 and 3, aside from the iOS encryption limit, and Kavita is part of the same subscription as local reading. The Kavita steps are in the Kavita guide.
The rest of the Android list, including free apps, is best comic reader apps for Android.
